I have an adptec 2940uw host adpter. my problem comes when i'm trying to compile for module support. The scsi adapter is compiled hard into the kernel as i run scsi disks. if i try to compile the kernel for module support but not set anything up as modules and then compile the kernel. the compile works fine. do the standard make modules and install modules.
reboot the machine, just after it reset's the scsi bus it would get something looking for a second scsi host but none is present. at this point it stops rebooting with a message about swapper not present.
as soon as i take the modules out and rebuild and reboot no problems. I don't use modules at all but i'm trying to set up sound with the OSS driver and it needs the module thing compiled in the kernel.
Just install the OSS program from the 4Front site, not the one on the SuSE disk. The one on the SuSE disk does not support PCI cards. Then in /./boot.local put the command /usr/local/bin/soundon. This will turn sound on at boot up.
Also in /boot.local you can put the command /sbin/modprobe (name of SCSI module). This will load the adptec module at boot up
Modules will not work on this machine at all. I have a 2940UW adapter it has on both 50pin and the 68pin connection i just found out. I can turn off the 50pin connection but not the 68pin one. i use 50pin cables. When i reboot with modules loaded (this is just saying i want module support) the kernel tries to set up the 68pin connection but there is nothing there. at this point i get a kernel panic. If i take out the module support then i can reboot without problems. The OSS driver seems to want module support which i can't give them thanks to the 2940. I do think that the soaund card on the 2940 is a isa card. this is from the manual. The big kicker is i can play music cd's and control sound level and the like but just can play any system sounds.
