and this sets your port to /dev/ttyS3, just use that as your port in kppp or something, I got this from linux.com in their tuneup section, it's quite good Brent Morris wrote:
To try and get it to work type:
setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq(X) port (Z) uart 16550A
where X is the irq of your modem and Z is the I/O port. you can find those out by typing
cat /proc/pci

linux does not suport almost all pci modems , as they are winmodems , that require the use of windows . Why , becouse it offloads a lot of stuff to the os to deal with , that is what meakes them chaper.
Better to stick with a real modem that uses jumpers or a dos config util to set them up. Most of these will be isa modems.
Better yet get an external modem that plugs into your serial port , prefferably a 16550 as these are the faster ones. You cna also get a pci epansion card that will add high speed serial ports as well , if you have the older serial ports. It will show the typpe at boot up.
With the external ones , all you do is plug them into the serial cable , plug in the power cable , and use yast to set it to the right serial port. (You may want to turn off the port you want to use in tha bios to keep ot only for the modem so windows doesent keep grabing it ) What nice is you dont need to oipen the case , and they hava a bunch of lights that tell you whats going on.
If you realy want to use the pci modem , there was a url posted not to long ago amout some sight that had a driver that can be used with one of the winmodem chip sets. try doing a s4earch on it.

Get a real modem.

Any one out there know how to get PCI modems working/recognized under SuSE Linux 6.3? Am having an absolutely horrible time and believed I have tried everything.
Can you add serial ports? Does the kernel have any options for PCI modems? When I run statserial I get some output for /dev/cua1. I believe that that is more or less grand-fathered and we're supposed to be pointing to /dev/ttSn.
Can anyone offer any help/suggestions?
Thanks a lot,
