I'm a Unix admin for Long's Drugs shepherding HPUX & AIX systems and we use Linux as Unix desktop workstations. At work we have been running Redhat, but I have been experimenting with different releases (i.e. Debian & Caldera). I just tried the new 6.3 SuSE release and I am delighted with the package, so I plan to pitch my tent here for a while. I do have a (stupid) question: Apparently, I am not installing LILO properly, because when I reboot, the system fails to find LILO and the boot fails.
How exactly does it fail, does it get the "OS not installed" error message from the BIOS or does it get only part of the LILO boot loader like "LI" then just starts beeping. If the second case is true, check the SuSE 6.3 manual, it will tell you what just part of the word LILO at boot means. If you put the second CD and boot of that, there is an option to "rescuse system" which is basically a single user mode that mounts a ram disk. Get your system up and running with that, mount your drives and make sure the kernel is in the /boot directory (even though your root drive will be mounted somewhere else). Run the lilo command on that drive, and also make sure you have an /etc/lilo.conf file.
I can use the 2nd distribution CD and boot the installation that way (by identifying the / partition). Obviously, there is a way to configure LILO to boot - what did I do wrong,
Not sure, was there a place in YaST during install that asked if you wanted to install lilo?
or more importantly, what do I need to do to correct this situation?
Try booting off second CD, go into "recuse mode" and mount your / drive, run lilo on that drive.
One other pressing concern - how does one pronounce SuSE?
I think it is pronounced like the women's name Suse.Like Sussie but without the "e" on the end.
Kind regards,
