I'm concerned with installing fonts in a way that will survive major system updates -- even if, perish the thought, I should at some future time want to switch over to RedHat, and certainly if I'm installing SuSE 8.0. So suppose I've gotten a collection of Type 1 fonts and want to install them. Should I put them in the Type 1 subdirectory or in the local subdirectory? Or am I better off to establish a whole new hierarchy under the local subdirectory?
This is really a particular case of the general question of how to install software robustly when it's not obtained from SuSE.
The best bet is to put them somewhere under /usr/local (e. g. /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts) because this directory will not be touched when upgrading your system.
