locate works quickly because of database (locatedb is the name of
the file, found in /var/lib) which needs to be updated every now and then.
By default (by that i mean, suse ships it like this:) cron updates locatedb
every (i think) 24 hours.
If you want to locate a binary try 'which <binary>'
'which' doesnt use a database, but is also quick because all it does
it search in the directories in your path variable. type 'echo $PATH' to see
them.
