In vi use this when not in -INSERT- mode, ":set tabstop=x" where x is the number of spaces.
To automate this, edit ~/.exrc and add the line(s): et tabstop=4 " or any other value, say, 8 set shiftwidth=4 " defines # of spaces in backward (^D) tabs when using the " autoindent option.
