I've used Java, Perl, C, and a few others. All with their own
merits. I'm not the best programmer but from what I have seen most
things are explained by how they compare to C. Most of the better
software I have used was written in C or C++. I would say it's
harder to learn but probably the best place to start. If you really
work at it and get a good understanding of how C works then you can
more easily incorporate other languages into your work.
I would also say that there are more tools, books, libraries, samples
and everything else available in C to help you learn. I'm still
learning C myself and can hardly do more than "hello world" but I've
seen more adds lately and more oportunities for C programmers lately
than anything else. Not to mention my own projects that are best
suited for C or C++ (next to learn). I wish when I was learning Java
I would have instead been learning C. They are similar, but I have a
long way to go.
