[SLE] Linux on a P75 with tulip ethernet

A friend has a problem which has us beaten. It's just so weird it's
untrue.
He started with RHL-6.1 and a P75 machine. All was OK, except the
network didn't work properly over the machine's Tulip based NIC. He was
getting lost packets and checksum failures. I told him to start again
with SuSE-6.3 which he did - and had the same problem. We replaced every
component - we actually went out and bought a second hand P75 machine -
and the problem persists. The new machine does exactly the same as the
old one, no matter how much memory we put it in, which disk drives we
use, which graphics card, you name it, we've swapped it. The old machine
had an Intel CPU, the new one has an AMD one.
Getting desperate, we reformatted and downgraded to my old SuSE-6.1, and
the problem nearly went away! He went from 60% packet loss on a ping to
5% packet loss. Still not good enough though... We tried the old 2.0.36
kernel from 6.1 and that was the same.
He's tried it on his network and mine, he's replaced all his network
cards, hub and cables, he's done it at my house and his, it doesn't
matter what is at the other end of the ping. It's dead strange.
My only conclusion at the moment is that P75s and DEC Tulip based
network cards don't get along. This seems unlikely - surely someone is
using one!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated...
