I remember a few years ago that Compuserve was doing the same type of
thing. They must have sold the patent. I also seem to recall hearing
that it was quite some time that the format was considered to be
essentially open. Then CS started 'asking' for royalties.
On Sat, 11 Dec 1999, p.b.burton was reputed to have said:
