No, it was never planed. Due the problems with 2.95 and 2.95.1 it
was clear that we continue to use egcs 1.1.2 like all other Linux
distributiors (except Debian) do, too.

Yes, and do you know how long you need to recompile everything and
fix it for a new compiler ? And then you need to test it ...
Maybe gcc 2.95.2 does now work on Intel, but the problem with ALPHA
isn't solved as far as I know: the _register_frame_info problem and
binary incompatibility due this problem.
