Following up my own post, but:

Since performing the 6.3 update I found the whole system to be generally
flakey. As well as my problem with kpager various apps were segfaulting
and netscape kept freezing and exhibiting some really strange behaviour.
Anyway, I repeated the update of the base system and now it seems that
everything is as it should be. I've even got my kpager back :)

It would be nice to know what the kbase update on ftp.suse.com fixes
though. All of the other directories have an index describing the fixes
or improvements in the files therein, but there's no description
attached to the kbase package in the /update/6.3/kde2 dir.
