Are you using the MySQL that came with SuSE?
If you are, then from my experience it is best to download the source from
www.mysql.com and compile that.
You shouldn't be having any problems of this type!!
Just one note, download the source and compile that instead of downloading
the binary and trying to compile that. Which is exactly what I did!! Too
funny.
Again, from my experience, it's always best to download the source from
thier respective sites i.e. Perl, Apache etc.
Hope this helps.
