I'm a photographer with a lot of experience of Photoshop.

Gimp is definitely the best software that I've found to replace
Photoshop but it does take some time to get used to. It's nothing
like as severe a learning curve as going through particle physics at
degree level or organic chemistry without experience (for example).
But you must be prepared for a learning experience.

One of the more difficult things is to configure a scanner so that
it does work effectively with Gimp. I use a Umax S-6E and this
isn't the best choice to use with sane or Xscanimage :-(

Best thing to do is use Gimp with Photoshop on another machine for a
few weeks (if you can).

Thanks

Richard
