Apparently the problems I've had in getting a legible copy of the man
page for ps(1) were caused by a defective man program in the SuSE 6.2
distribution.  I went to
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/usr.bin, got the file
man-1.5d.tar.gz, and installed the software contained therein.  (Too
bad that Yast doesn't help with that installation; I now have a
package that Yast doesn't know about, and that's not good.  Fodder for
another thread.)  The package contains a different and far better man
program together with man pages for man and several other programs.

I recommend downloading that package and installing it.
