If the module is loaded properly.

what I get out of 'cdrecord -scanbus' (the Pioneer is the 'real' SCSI CD

in the boot messages? Can I check anything in /proc to make sure it's
working (the kernel compiled properly with ide-scsi in it)? Do you see
anything relating to ide-scsi in particular, not necessarily about the
CD-writer?
Yes, dmesg should report that it found the device. Did the HP show up on
boot at all?

solely as SCSI?
Truth be told, I only have an entry in fstab for convenience. It's not
necessary. All of my ATAPI devices are seen as SCSI devices. The Zip
(hdb), the CD-ROM (hdc), and the CD-R (hdd).

That means the module didn't load. Did you remove ATAPI CD support
completely? Did you append LILO so that hdd=ide-scsi?

got to do something to activate it. Since it's not a module, I can't just
insmod and see if it has loaded... Is there any way to tell?
If you did a `make oldconfig' on my .config, and then `make menuconfig' to
suit your needs (specifically your network settings, assuming that / is not
on the Advansys), you should have a working system.
