Somewhere along the line (6.1, 6.2?) SuSE changed the default
behavior of gpm. It is no longer started in run level 3, only at
run level 2. This is easy to fix. Look for

/sbin/init.d/rc3.d/S20gpm
/sbin/init.d/rc3.d/K20gpm

If these do not exist, create them. They are both simply soft links
to

/sbin/init.d/gpm

You can check to see if gpm will work OK by entering

/sbin/init.d/gpm start
