AC'97, as I understand it, is Microsoft/Intel's answer to the old `100%
SoundBlaster-Compatible' dillema. It is a new standard (something the
WIntel group likes to do to us) designed to keep sound architecture fairly
easy to write code for.

Some AC97 chipsets, like the Ensoniq 137x family, are well supported by
Linux in several forms. Some AC97 chipsets, such as those PCI models made
by Yamaha, are not supported by Linux in *any* form. Use the CDB as your
