That "young net admin" was an MS shrill and the article was a plant.
It was written to the herds of M$ sheep who are still paying grazing
fees, to keep them from trying the Linux grass on the otherside of the
fence. It won't work for long, though. Continually rising grazing
fees, poorer quality grass and constantly muddy water in the support
stream will drive even the most faithful sheep to better fields. If you
get the newsletter called "Woddy's MS Watch", which contains tips and
tricks about the various M$ apps, you'll will get a feel for the
increasing levels of frustration being exprienced by M$ users. When
NT2000 comes out people will really be forced to consider if they want
to pay the ever increasing upgrade fees not only for NT but for *each*
software package they use. AND, they will also have to pay hardware
upgrade costs to run the software! That business model may be great for
the bottom lines of MS and some of the third party software vendors but
it means reduced profits or less free cash for everyone else. Don't
want to upgrade? Too bad, the data format on the new software is not
compatible with the old software so swapping documents is out.
MS has a LOT of sheep following their pasture, but I predict that NT
2000 will be the biggest software bomb ever dropped on the unsuspecting
herd, and we will see the biggest software migration in history.
