The complexity of XTerm is one of the reasons I don't use it anymore.  Have
you looked into simpler (if not better-documented :) emulators like Konsole
or Aterm/Wterm/Eterm?  I really like Konsole, with it's ease of
configuration and number of preconfigurations.
