[SLE] kernel ran out of input data

Hi list,

I was trying to compile and run my first kernel tonight. Actually, it was
quite simply to add generic scsi support for my new scanner. So, I went
into xconfig and selected the appropriate module. After running everything
just as prescribed in /usr/src/linux/README, i.e., make dep, make bzImage,
make modules, and make modules_install. Everything seemed to proceed fine.
I backed up the old kernel and modules, put an entry into lilo that
allowed me to go back into the old kernel in case things went wrong,
which they unfortunately did. As I tried to boot I got the message
kernel ran out of input data. Any idea what could have caused this?
I may actually have selected a couple of other things that I thought I needed,
like ppp, loopback, and other stuff while in xconfig. Would it be possible
to load the configuration of the stock SuSE kernel from a file and then
just add the one tiny module I need, i.e., sg.o?

Thanks for any pointers.
