I am about to embark on a big (for me) project. I want to create a firewall
using SuSE 6.2. Following is how I am going to set this up. If anyone has any
ideas or better solutions, feel free to contact me via the list or personally.
I am using an AMD K2/350 based machine with a 3GB HD, 192MB RAM, and full time
internet connection using a cable modem. This is a home network consisting of
3 clients, 3 servers, and hosting email for about 10 users.
I want (I think) to use ipchains for my firewalling. Will I be able to select
port ranges to pass traffic? I read the HOW-TO but didn't see any reference to
ranges. I also read the ip masqerading mini HOW-TO. Which would be better?
Going to allow HTTP both ways, same with FTP, email also ( 110 and 25), but I
want to be able to specify UDP or TCP ports to be open mostly for online game
purposes.
I am going to setup a DNS server using bind 8.1.2. I am not sure if I want
just a caching server or a full blown DNS server. I do have someone supplying
my DNS resolution now (ISP).
I want to use ntpd to synchronize time with a time server and then synchronize
my clients using this machine.
Let me know of anything I should look at here. Or anything that might be a
security concern. I am also interested in what I should install and or remove
from the mininum SuSE install.
Thanks,
