[SLE] pppd log issue and sound config problem

Hello Everyone,
I have a two part question here.
1) PPPD logs this message approximately every 30 seconds.
Sep 29 13:09:04 TheWave1 pppd[302]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x38
magic=0x53cbbe3]
Sep 29 13:09:04 TheWave1 pppd[302]: rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x38
magic=0x72bf2197]
This seems excessive to say the least. This will make the 'message' file
quite large over
a relatively short period of time (lets say 12 hours being connected to
one's ISP). This means
4 message lines per minute, 240 message lines per hour and in 12 hours
there will be
2880 lines of these silly messages. Is there a way to lengthen the time
in which these messages
are logged ? Or perhaps stop them from being logged all together ?
2) Re-compiling the original kernel after installing SuSE 6.2. PLease
note: This is
the 2.2.10-SuSE kernel and source that I am using.
I have a Dual Celeron machine and after the initial install of SuSE 6.2
I needed to take
advantage of SMP. However, the installed 2.2.10 kernel doesn't have SMP
support
built-in, so I needed to re-compile the 2.2.10 kernel for SMP support.
With the newly
installed 2.2.10 kernel and modules, sound (implemented as a module)
works fine, printing
(implemented as a module) is working fine. Sadly to say, when I
re-compile the kernel to
implement SMP (I enabled sound and printing as modules), SMP works fine,
however, sound
and printing doesn't exist anymore....even though I enabled these
services as modules. I can't
understand why 'sound' and 'printing' work so well with the newly
installed kernel and not
with a re-compiled version using the same source the original kernel
came from ? Is there anyone
out there in SuSE land that has re-compiled a 2.2.10-SuSE kernel for SMP
support and managed to
to get 'sound' and 'printing' to work ? I would like to hear from you :)
Thank you in advance for your
help.
Best Regards,
Chris Parman
