What's your /etc/fstab? Maybe you, as a user, don't have mounting authorization.
My fstab cdrom line is:

/dev/hdc        /cdrom                    iso9660         ro,noauto,user 0   0

ps. Before you attempt to mount the cdrom, try 'df' to see if it's already
mounted...
