I am also a newbie -- but here goes anyway:
1) to log on as a user the file /usr/sbin/pppd must be setuid root
(whatever that means). Do a ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd -- it should read
something like
-rwsr-sr-- 1 root dialout 119092 Apr 15 17:33 /usr/sbin/pppd
If it doesn't you must do (as root) chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd ,
and also make sure that you are in the dialout group (use Yast -- system
administration)
As for the Wvdial problems, I think you can ignore those error messages
-- it seems to work anyway. Anyone else with any ideas?
As a general rule you should NOT surf the Internet as root.
