All:
I have gpm running as well. I went to start installing imwheel
which is supposed to be a daemon that run to detect your wheel movements.
I added two lines to my /etc/XF86Config file and it worked. This may work
for you.

/etc/XF86Config

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
SampleRate 60
BaudRate 1200
ZAxisMapping 4 5 <---------
Buttons 3 <---------
EndSection

Try adding these two lines and restarting X.
