There has to be a bunch of brain deads out there  :-)  because 
I have found the same thing whenever I have tried to use a  file name
different from arch/i386/defconfig for saving my kernel configuration.

I still dont know when this happens (it is not always) but when you
encounter it, it is sorta
annoying anyway ...
