Is it a Presario? I haven't seen too many Presario's running around that had modem *cards* in them (most were integrated components). There is a family of Compaq modems, I believe the designation is VC, that were the first of the winmodems. AFAIK, these were all integrated though. If you run `pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf' does the file list a modem anywhere? What do the pnptools say that the modem is?
