I wouldn't say `worthless', necessarily, but I would say that you could have spent your money on better things. You won't see support for the SBLive! in the kernel, and you won't see it in the ALSA project, but rumor has it that OSS is working on one.

Creative Labs has reportedly released a module that will work with 2.0.36 and 2.2.5 kernels, but I've heard stories with mixed results about even it and those kernels. The Diamond Monster Sound MX-300 is probably closer to being supported. They (SBL! and MX-300) use the same core chipset, Aureal's Vortex2, but Creative is being *very* nasty about releasing information for their card.

I have an SB Ensoniq PCI, which is supported by the kernel, ALSA, and OSS quite openly (es1371 chipset). My favorite is ALSA (Free Software, OSS-type control). The SB16 PCI is based on the es1373 chipset, which can be used with the es1371 modules and offers Creative's `Environmental Audio' extensions under Windows. At about $40 US, that would be an excellent card to invest in.
