Hi list,
after setting up my soundcard (even though it may limp at 8 bit)
I tried to play some audio CDs on my CDROM drive. I spent quite some
time on getting ripit.pl to work with no success. What I did was:
I followed pretty much the instructions given in the README file, among
which were to install bladeenc, which I did. I ran the config.sh script
in the /usr/lib/X11/xmcd/config directory successfully. However, I am
stuck with the following error when I try to run ripit:
Getting CDDB info...
TOC ERROR: No Disc ID found at /usr/bin/ripit.pl line 196, <CDTOC> chunk 1.
The /tmp/cdtoc file says: This command is not valid in the current state.
which probably means that it wasn't able to get a table of contents of the
CD. By the way, how does it get this? I am not sure whether this is done
by reading the info from the CD or going on-line into one of the web-based
data bases.
/tmp/ripit.log remains empty.
When I try things by hand I get the following messages:
root@colomba:/tmp > cda -dev /dev/cdrom on
Initializing...
CD audio daemon pid=18015 dev=/dev/cdrom started.
root@colomba:/tmp > cda -dev /dev/cdrom device
Device: /dev/cdrom
CD-ROM: ()
Mode: SCSI-2
root@colomba:/tmp > cda -dev /dev/cdrom status
No_Disc disc:- -- -- --:-- -lock -shuf -prog -rept -
root@colomba:/tmp > cda -dev /dev/cdrom extinfo
This command is not valid in the current state.
root@colomba:/tmp > cda -dev /dev/cdrom toc
This command is not valid in the current state.
Apparently, cda thinks there is no disc in the tray, which there is of
course (Larry Norman's "Stranded in Babylon" :-).
So, my first idea was perhaps incompatile hardware. I am running a no-name
CDROM (44X) which works just fine for data. And of course, I am running SuSE
6.2 which I just got a week ago. The CD-ROM is an ATAPI IDE and resides on
/dev/hdb.
It can't be hardware though, because I can play my CD just fine using
workbone.
So, any ideas as to what my problem with xmcd could be?
Any pointers? I have looked at the docs coming with xmcd and of
course the man pages, but wasn't able to overcome the problems
from there.
Best regards, Alex.
