Last night I tried making a disk bzImage for a kernel I compiled just
for the 486. I actually got it to boot most of the way (since I have
an existing debian install on one partition of that machine) - and the
3c503 module seemed to work because the kernel messages identified the
card and gave no errors (usually I'd get an Eth0 message).
So now I know the 3c503 should work perfectly. I did get a kernel
panic at which point the boot stopped, but probably because it bumped
up against errors between my debian install and the kernel.

I inserted the modules disk then pressed "Load additional modules"
which is when it gave me the error. Actually I think the error is
more likely "directory is not correct".
So I am at least hopeful that the modules that I have will work - I
just need to figure out how to get the bootdisk to get the module to
load. I even tried making a copy of the bootdisk and removing the
existing kernel (linux) and inserting my own. Unfortunately the linux
bootdisk is not in DOS format and I got confused which format I should
use for the mount command (minix, dos, ext2fs). This was at 11 last
night, so I gave up for the night and figured I would try again - plus
any suggestions you or the list might have.
Thanks,
Stuart
