I opened my new box last night. Thanks for all the guidance from fellow
list members. After weighing up all the pros and cons I decided to go for a
fresh installation. This had the added benefit of removing all the rubbish
which has accumulated over the past few months.
I was very pleased with the changes I found in the installation.
Previously I had used default installations with a lot of editing to get
my configuration of choice.
The new menu now gives a greater number of choices, but the standard
default config required less editing to give me what I wanted.I must admit
that i was a little surprised with some of the included
packages......PGP2.6.3 for example instead of PGP5.0 or GNUPG.
The installation went smoothly and I soon had a working system. It seems to
be much faster than 6.1
I did have a few inconsistencies. Kmail and Netscape locked up a few times,
requiring me to restart X and for some reason the system failed to read
floppy back ups I had made from my old system. When I dismounted and tried
again a few minutes later everything seemed to be OK.
Has anyone installed Fortify with Netscape? I tried but the two
programs do not appear to be communicating. Netscape is still showing as
export grade.
I also have a query about Star office. At 3.30am my brain was beginning to
slow down, and the Readme file did not register! How do I install it? It
would appear to be different from previous versions.
All in all I think SuSe has done a good job with this one.
Regards
Brian
