Didn´t SaX autodetect your card? If it didn´t, try "Genereric Server
selection" and choose the Mach64 X-Server. Most cards don´t need any
special options.

Yes, that is the best way. Installing over a totally different kind of
distribution without formatting will leave you with a load of abandoned
files. This will end up in a mess.

As mentioned before, try the generic Mach64, if SaX does not tell
"Autodetect" in the server selection. If your monitor is not in the list,
choose the expert settings and enter the frequency range as stated in the
monitor´s manual.

Did you try "xf86config"? Only "XF86Setup" ist written with capital
letters (and I hate this inconsistency) :)
