First, my subscription arrived via DigitalRiver!
My first installation attempt was to install SuSE 6.2 "from scratch" on
top of an RH 6.0 installation.
The machine is a DELL OptiPlex 450MHz with 128MB RAM and Three HD's and
a CD ROM.
It has an AGP Rage Pro 2X mach64 video card with 8MB onboard,
DAC=207MHz.
The monitor is a Dell 1025TM.
The RH install found and identified the video card automatically, and I
selected the Monitor. XF86 setup was a breeze, and GNOME fired the
first time.
Well, not so with SuSE 6.2.
Hey Lenz, what settings do I use for the video card? None of the mach64
options on the install CD work.
When I first installed, I decided not to "upgrade" the RH install, but
to install on top of it with the "Install from scratch" option. I got
lots of *.rpmsave files generated, and then error messages about X3dmX
(I think that is the Athena Widgets), then error messages about missing
directories, etc..
When the system finally gave me a longin prompt, following the message
"Please login as 'root'...", it rejected root as a valid user. I had no
choice but to boot DOS and run FDISK to blow the partitions away. THEN,
the install from "scratch" option worked perfectly. I installed
everything and one hour and 15 minutes later I was setting at the
command prompt as root.
I ran 'sax' and discovered that no video options for the ATI AGP Rage
Pro 2X video card exists, and that the closest I can get to the montior
is Dell 1025HE. The monitor may work, but I know that none of the video
options do.
I attempted to run XF86Config but it wasn't in the path. I tried
/etc/XF86Config but I wouldn't work either. I tried to 'locate' it but
locate wasn't found. I tried locatedb but it wasn't found.
Then it was time to go home, so I will set some profile and boot.local
settings tomorrow.
Moral: burn RH to the ground before you install SuSE!
