Maybe this has been addressed in 2.2.3. There is a patch for inode
freelists at:
http://www.kernelnotes.org/v22patch/patch-2.2.3/linux_include_linux_mm.h.html

And another from a later kernal 2.2.4 from Mr. Torvalds himself:

The last message raises an interesting question. I have egcs
installed. How about the others that have had this problem?
