boot problem

Hello,

Thought I'd try asking this again.

After attempting a kernel recompile I began having the following boot
problem with LILO - booting from floppy works, I just can't boot from
the hard drive.

I'm using kernel 2.2.10 on SuSE 6.1. I did have everything working
before with this kernel, its only with this latest compile that things
have gone wrong. I have Linux on hdb2 and the swap space on hdb5

Using the floppy I get the following messages:

... [all going normally]
Partition check
hda: hda1
hdb: hdb1 <hdb5> hdb2
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) read only
Freeing unused kernel memory: 52k freed
Adding swap: ...
And everything goes as normal

When using LILO I get the following:
... [everything looks normal up to here so far as I can tell]
Partition check
hda: hda1
hdb: hdb1 < > hdb2
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) read only
Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
[and the boot process stops here]

Notice the missing <hdb5> (swap) during LILO boot. Also, I have Linux
installed on hdb (ms win on hda). I tried putting the old kernel back
in place, rerunning make modules, ..., make bzlilo, even recompiling yet
another new kernel (to the way it was before) all the normal
kernel compilation things I could - nothing is working. I'm fortunate
that I have an up to date boot disk.

I appreciate anyone's help in getting my system to boot normally again.
