ext2 file system has built in systems that keep fragmentation to a minimum.
This means that it does fragment a little. The percentage of fragmentation is
mainly determined by the size of your partitions (2 small partitions will cause
less fragmentation then one big).
fsck can report the percentage of fragmentation; In fact this happens when you
boot up (maximum mount count reached, check forced). I've heard that there are
applications to defragment ext2 fs but I don't think anything is stable yet.
I would recommend taking a look at www.linuxberg.com
