Sounds like you need to configure the mouse in X. Use yast to run XFconfig
and see what you can do with the mouse.

I use 6.1 in runlevel two so I really can't help you here.

No fvwm here so I don't know, sorry.

They are the same format. I have never had trouble using RedHat rpms.
