Hello,
My SB 16 PCI (not PnP) would not work until I commented out three lines in
the /etc/conf.modules file.
I put # in front of
alias char-major-14
alias sound off
alias midi off

Then I cat a .au file to my speakers, and I had sound. Although the sound
sucked.
If you go with OSS, DO NOT comment out the lines above. You only want to
do that if you are going to use the module in the kernal
