You do not need to do this.  The safest way to go about upgrading is

0) cd /usr/src
1) rm linux
2) tar -xzvf linux-2.2.1.tar.gz
3) mv linux linux-2.2.1
4) ln -s linux-2.2.1 linux

Your old kernel source tree will be intact.  The old modules will remain
in /lib/modules/2.0.36 and you may use either kernel.
