When trying to start up postgres for the first time  (using the suse
support data base  PostgresSQL:  First steps as a guide)

"rcpostgres start

u -postgres

createuser denis  "

 or I also tried

   "creatuser root"

I get the following error message:

connection to database 'template1' failed.
connectDB() failed: is the postmaster running and accepting connections
at 'UNIX SOCKET' on port '5432'?
createuser: database access failed

Can anyone help me out here?
