<DIV><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial size=2>Hello,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial size=2></FONT><FONT face=Arial
size=2>recently I installed a Suse Linux 5.3 with X-windos and KDE on a notebook
(the ALDI notebook !!!!). Everything had worked well and I compiled a new
kernel. I compiled the kernel with network support but still without network
card (loopback). But now I got strange messages after starting the
system:</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial size=2>login: syslogd: syslog: Unknown
protocol, suspending inet service. : Invalid argument</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial size=2></FONT><FONT face=Arial
size=2>socket: Invalid argument</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Also during boot process a strange message
appears:</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>.....</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>grep: /proc/net/dev: No such file or
directory</FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Starting syslog services.</FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>....</FONT> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial size=2>But the system still runs (so far I
can evaluate this cause I'm a new user for Unix System). Are these error
messages normal and because of a missing Network Card ?? I would appreciate very
much any comments</FONT></DIV>
