This is just an idea. Have you checked your free disk space? You can do
this using df. Sometimes if one of your partitions is almost full it will
prevent users other than root from logging in. Also, if your /tmp
directory has been deleted it will cause similar problems. However if you
can log into X as a regular user these probably aren't the problems.
