You are probably either seeing:
1) an rxvt with a pixmap that matches the display background
or ( maybe more likely these days )
2) Eterm. The newer Eterms have an -O option which gives
pseudo-transparency. Unlike rxvt, with Eterm, if you _move_ the Eterm, the
background of the Eterm window will change to reflect the new placement.
There are also tinting and shading options to go with transparency that
are pretty neat.
