[SuSE Linux] stupid question?

likely an easy one for you Linux studs:
when I am logged in as myself (i.e., not root) and running X with KDE (though
this might happen with all wm's), if I "su root", and try to edit a file, say,
by calling xemacs, or even emacs, I cant! I get:
chris@RomperRoom:/home/chris > su root
Password:
RomperRoom:/home/chris # emacs
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
connections from your machine.
How do I fix this? What is this '-d'? Thanks in advance,
chris
