[SuSE Linux] shadow passwords

I am running xi graphics' cde and my passwords are served by an NIS server.
cde seems to have some trouble with the shadow passwords and won't let anybody
login other than root. Does anybody know how to remove shadow passwords and
start using normal passwd?
