This is a TERRIBLE idea, to break sound completely because a percentage
of your users are such idiots they can't be trusted to have properly
configured boxes.

If I manually inserted the module I got sound from cd and mp3s.  Midi
was completely broken, period.  I installed OSS just to see if that
would work, and I got _the_exact_same_results_, cd and mp3 played fine,
no midi at all.  Apparently there is some sort of problem with /dev/dsp
that neither S.u.S.E. 5.1 or 5.2 suffered from.  

This has totally sucked for me, S.u.S.E. linux was a very important part
of my life, and today's problems have made me _physically_ill_, I am so
stressed over it.  BUT I WILL NOT USE A BROKEN DIST.  Nothing would make
me happier than to have a 100 0.000000unctional 5.3 install, but I am not
going to relearn everything I know about linux to make this dist have
proper sound.  If someone could give me a plain answer why /dev/dsp is
broken with the kernel drivers AND with oss under 5.3 and how to fix it
I would be in heaven, otherwise I need to format and give my S.u.S.E.
partitions to FreeBSD because I can't afford to go any longer without my
pc.
