Yes, IMHO you are wrong :-) StarOffice is free (no charge, not
OpenSource) for personal nonprofit use. StarDivision asks the
people how download it to register first, so they know if there
is someone how actually uses SO.

You can also use ftpsearch to find a mirror that carries SO and
get it without registering first, but if everyone did so
StarDivision might come to the conclusion that nobody is using
SO for Linux and might stop developing it.

If you don't want to download 50+ Mb you can order a CD along
with a bound manual from StarDivision for about 70 DM. Or you
can contact Caldera and get the commercial version.
