All I did was recompile and change a few packages into modules instead of
part of the kernel. I kept getting an error message at the end of making
the zImage that said my file was limited to 512k and I was generating a
file in excess of 570k. 
I guess we all have different limits, but you might try that with packages
that aren't very often needed.
