I dislike all package formats equally. There is no substitute for
compiling from source. Packages with dependency checking like rpm is
the way to go for initial install, no argument there, and I understand
the need to have an easy delivery format that Joe Newuser can cope with.

I've always been more at home with make config. make xconfig is like
taking a shower with your clothes on, but that's just me.

The freebsd native netscape I'm running seems faster, and for a fact
uses less cpu than linux netscape does. In fact, xwindows period feels
much faster in freebsd than in linux. I'm running some of my linux bins
and they aren't displaying any abnormal behaviour. Nice. The more I run
freebsd the more I like it. The console in S.u.S.E. is much nicer, and
like I've said, S.u.S.E. is a far more polished desktop os.
I think my initial impressions of freebsd were tainted by my familiarity
with linux. I am really starting to like freebsd a lot, and I would
recommend it to anyone looking to try another flavor of *nix. It isn't
anywhere near as slick right out of the box as most linux distributions,
but it's a killer os for hackers. If you are a hands-on type with your
os then freebsd might be for you. I'm not jumping ship or anything, I
love S.u.S.E. and will continue to be a big advocate for them, but
FreeBSD just became a permanent fixture at the Lankton house. I really
need to set up another box, or two :)
