Well, Solaris is pretty good, but I installed Solaris 2.6 on
a second partition along side Linux on a 200 MHz Pentium
with 32mb memory, and it runs much worse than Linux. Perhaps
the difference would be less noticable with 64mb, but with
32 there seemed to be a significant difference. Also, the
Solaris installation is much, much more work, since it
comes with _no_ extra software - no ghostview, no TeX, no
Perl, etc. There is not a huge abundance of free software
available in the Solaris pkg format, so you wind up having
to compile everything yourself. Think of compiling all
the SuSE packages yourself, and how much work that would
be ;-) Another comment: Solaris itself, with no extra software,
takes up a lot more disk space than Linux.
I've nothing against Solaris, but I've tried both, and I am
sticking with SuSE Linux :-)
